History of esso oil company
The story of Exxon and Mobil begins in 1870 with John D. Rockefeller and his associates forming the Standard Oil Company. John D. Rockefeller incorporated this company with Henry Flagler in 1870, and until it was broken up Standard oil was the largest, most profitable business in the world. However, in 1911, Standard Oil was forced to break up into 34 separate, unrelated companies by the Supreme Court. Esso began life as the Anglo American Oil Company in 1888. It was the first foreign affiliate of John D Rockefeller's US company the Standard Oil Trust. It had a head office at Bishopsgate, London, and a depot at Purfleet in Essex. The depot stored paraffin being shipped from New York for use in lamps throughout England. German-American Petroleum Company known as Deutsch-Amerikanische Petroleum Gesellschaft was a German petroleum company that was a subsidiary of Standard Oil and was founded in 1890. From 1950 onwards the company was called the Esso Deutschland GmbH and has been a subsiduary of the ExxonMobil group since 1999. While many people associate Esso with Standard Oil since "Esso" is the phonetic pronunciation of the first letters in U.S. petroleum conglomerate that once owned it, its roots are actually Canadian. In 1880, 16 refineries located between Lakes Huron and Erie, an area sometimes called "Canada's Oil Lands," joined forces to create the Imperial Oil Company. Exxon celebrates 100 years since the formation of the Standard Oil Trust in 1882. In its first 100 years, the company evolved from a domestic refiner and distributor of kerosene to a large multinational corporation, involved at every level of oil and gas exploration, production, refining and marketing, and petrochemicals manufacturing. At that point, the stations in Ohio were rebranded Humble (but the gasoline, motor oil, and lubricant products kept the name Enco) until the name In 1888 it organized Anglo-American Oil Company (predecessor of Esso Petroleum Company) to market oil in the British Isles and, two years later, acquired a major interest in the German firm that would become Esso AG.
